2015 Chardonnay

Tasting Notes:

From a pretty straw color in the glass, aromas of crisp apple, pear, and butterscotch drops greet the nose.  The palate is teased with Granny Smith apples, citrus, pear, and a touch of vanilla.  A fine finish leaves you ready for the next sip!

Fermentation and aging:

The Chardonnay was picked and pressed back to back in two lots – upper and lower Gravel Ridge Vineyard - on September 1 and 2, at 24 and 23.8 Brix respectively. They were settled separately before coming to our French oak barrels for native yeasts to kick off fermentation, with a 33% new oak treatment.  Fermentation continued slowly over a six week period as the wine fermented to dryness.  The lots were assembled into our estate Chardonnay in the month leading to bottling.  336 cases were bottled in July 2016.  14.1% alcohol.

Vintage

In 2015 2015 we began to emerge from the drought with 22.9 inches of rainfall (80% of average). The warm summer stressed the vines early which accelerated ripening and concentrated the fruit flavors in the grapes. Harvest started with Pinot Noir on August 17, then it was a fast and furious September: Chardonnay and Viognier, then Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, and finally Cabernet Franc on September 30. The last wines were pressed off October 12.
